Changing Tides, Changing Lives
The ocean is key to mitigating the most challenging effects of climate change for all of us. Its biodiversity makes it the planet’s largest carbon sink, and restoring and conserving our marine environments and coastal habitats will protect the 1.4 billion people currently living in regions that will be directly influenced by changing ocean conditions.
The communities that contribute the least to global emissions are unfortunately the communities with the most to lose, as they are disproportionately affected by extreme weather patterns, sea level rise, decreasing food security and disruptions to the global economy.
For nearly twenty years now, we have strived to bridge the gap between philanthropy – which has historically given the ocean only 7% of environmental grantmaking, and ultimately, less than 1% of all philanthropy – with the communities that need this funding for marine science and conservation the most. Your contribution is invaluable for all who fight to preserve their natural resources while increasing our collective climate resilience against what is to come.
Tides of Change

Most marine debris clean up solutions are not focused on the chemistry of plastic, and as a result of your support, we were able to launch our Redesigning Plastics Initiative to inform collective chemical redesign efforts to increase recyclability and reduce plastic pollution.

There's little global infrastructure to monitor and respond to ocean acidification. The International Ocean Acidification Initiative co-designs and funds accessible equipment, conducts global training workshops for scientists, and guides policymakers on effective adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The ocean’s challenges span beyond political lines. We provide a nonpartisan platform for scientists, resources and expertise to come together and find global solutions. These relationships enable scientists to educate decision makers about conservation needs and encourage them to change policies.

A sustainable Blue Economy helps maintain ocean health and mitigate climate change. We co-launched the first Rockefeller Ocean Strategy to direct corporate investment to ocean-centric companies who operate in a positive way. We also work with Credit Suisse to push companies to do a better job for the ocean.
