Nias Hernández Montcourt

Intern

Nias Hernández Montcourt has a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPRRP), where she had the opportunity to become a certified Environmental Interpreter. Montcourt is currently completing her master’s degree in Urban Planning at the Graduate School of Planning from UPRRP with an emphasis on social and environmental planning, while also working as a Research Assistant at the Coastal Research and Planning Institute of Puerto Rico, under the direction of Dr. Maritza Barreto. Recently, Montcourt was recruited to work for The Ocean Foundation’s project: “Designing a framework for the evaluation of vulnerability to acidification of Puerto Rico’s oceans”.

Nias has vastly expanded her knowledge about environmental management techniques throughout her experience at internships such as: The Pro-Northeast Ecological Corridor Coalition; Youth and Environment of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program; and ecOceanica in Perú. Presently, Montcourt’s main academic and professional interests include feminist urbanism, environmental geography, coastal planning, and climate risk management. Finally, her hobbies include going to the beach, reading, and drawing, as well as appreciating different forms of art, especially contemporary dance.
