Vision
To combat global climate change by helping communities get on their path toward sustainability
Mission
To build local resilience leading to sustainable communities by advancing clean energy technologies and promoting services that achieve water and energy efficiency in an integrated manner
Challenges
- Need to significantly and rapidly reduce emissions to avoid the worst effects of climate change
- Inefficient energy generation and distribution
- Water management being considered as a separate piece from energy and community development
- Limited coordination amongst public and the private sector, and with community members
- Lack of integrated planning geared towards implementation and long-term sustainability
- Insufficient support for non-traditional, clean technologies
Goals and Objectives
Anchor will develop the framework for combining and advancing both renewable technologies and equitable community development through integrated project planning and R&D support. This will help achieve all of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It also will help countries meet their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions as pledged in COP 21. Two main goals of Anchor are:
To bridge communication and knowledge gaps through integrated planning, education and training
Anchor will facilitate the integrated planning process, involving all key stakeholders. This will include:
- Conducting human and natural resource assessments to clarify the starting point for each project
- Undertaking feasibility analyses to align project goals with community development goals
- Coordinating communication amongst organizations
- Sharing knowledge of how to use available tools and services
- Helping identify funding support for applications of these tools and services
- Providing technical expertise and training on renewable technologies
To conduct scientific R&D and demonstrate technological solutions
Anchor will develop living classrooms and laboratories in conjunction with educational and research institutions. These R&D platform sites will advance and help demonstrate new ways to combine different clean energy generation methods (integrated, hybrid distributed generation) and localize the energy supply network that will cater to these methods while preventing service interruptions (e.g. microgrid).
Partnerships
Local community (including government representatives, local community leaders, residents, and business owners); educational and research Institutions; NGOs; international financial institutions; renewable technology companies; global engineering firms; urban designers and planners; renewable technology implementation experts.
