Edward H. Tillinghast, III is a partner at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP’s New York office where he is a practice group leader for the Firm’s Finance and Bankruptcy practice group.  He specializes in U.S. and cross-border insolvencies and related litigation, particularly involving Asia, Latin America, and other emerging and developing markets.  He has been counsel in four cases in the Supreme Court of the United States, including one case involving the Puerto Rican debt restructuring legal regime, where he represented LatinoJustice PRLDEF along with a number of other Latino and Hispanic non-profit organizations to help develop viable pathways for debt restructuring.  He is a graduate of Lake Forest College and Chicago-Kent College of Law where he was on the editorial board of the Chicago-Kent Law Review, and is admitted to practice law in New York and Illinois.

Ed is a life-long competitive sailor who grew up on Eastern Long Island.  In addition to his own sailing, as an attorney, Ed has been an active shore-side team member for a 2014-15 and 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race team focused on ocean sustainability and increasing awareness of the impact of non-reusable plastics and other pollutants.  He has also represented one of the original America’s Cup teams for the 36th America’s Cup.

Ed resides in New York City where he and his wife raised their two children.
