Rolando Morillo

Senior Advisor, Blue Economy

Rolando Morillo brings more than two decades of experience at the intersection of capital markets, climate science, and ocean sustainability to The Ocean Foundation. He advises on blue economy strategy and sustainable finance initiatives, drawing on his pioneering work embedding environmental science into investment frameworks.

In 2012, Rolando partnered with The Ocean Foundation to help launch the Rockefeller Climate Solutions strategy, now one of the longest-tenured active public equity strategies focused on climate mitigation and adaptation. Building on that collaboration, he worked with The Ocean Foundation and Rockefeller Asset Management to conceptualize the UBS Rockefeller Ocean Engagement Fund, a groundbreaking public equity strategy that uses active shareholder engagement to advance a sustainable blue economy. Rolando served as the Fund’s portfolio manager.

Central to Rolando’s approach is the ocean-climate nexus: the recognition that healthy ocean systems are foundational to climate stability, economic resilience, and global food security. Through engagements across sectors—from shipping and water infrastructure to waste management and marine resource stewardship—he has helped drive measurable improvements in corporate environmental practices.

Rolando plays an active leadership role in sustainable ocean finance. He is a signatory to the Blue Economy Finance Principles, has convened the UNEP FI Ocean Stewardship Council since 2022, and speaks frequently on blue finance and climate resilience.

He holds an MBA in Sustainability and Finance from NYU Stern and a BS in Environmental & Business Economics and Geography from Rutgers University. Fluent in English and Spanish, Rolando’s global perspective was shaped by formative experiences in Ecuador and Latin America, where early exposure to diverse ecosystems instilled a lasting appreciation for the interdependence of natural systems and human prosperity.
